Toyota Aqua, Voxy Hybrid, Honda Fit, Nissan Note e-Power: real landed costs, VRT savings, and 5-year ownership numbers
By Nobuko Japan Import Team | Updated: April 2026 | 100+ Irish hybrid imports handled since 2014
| Importing a hybrid car from Japan to Ireland saves €4,000 to €7,000 versus buying from an Irish dealer. The saving comes from three sources: lower Japanese auction prices, 0% customs duty under the EU-Japan EPA from 2026, and lower VRT because hybrids emit less CO2. VRT on a Toyota Aqua (85g/km CO2) runs 9.75% on the Revenue OMSP versus 28% on a petrol Toyota Voxy (165g/km). The most popular Irish hybrid imports are: Toyota Aqua, Honda Fit Hybrid, Toyota Prius, Nissan Note e-Power, and Toyota Voxy Hybrid. Always verify hybrid battery State of Health (SOH) before purchase. Nobuko Japan checks SOH on every hybrid before shipping. |
You want a hybrid; lower fuel bills, lower emissions and in Ireland, you even get lower taxes.
However, buying a used hybrid in Ireland costs a fortune. A 2017 Toyota Aqua (Prius C) at a Dublin dealer: €12,000-€14,000. The same car imported from Japan: €7,000-€8,500 landed and registered which is €4,000-€5,500 in your pocket.
Why the difference? Two reasons; first, Japan has millions of hybrids. Supply is high and prices are low. Second, Revenue gives hybrids a lower VRT rate than petrol or diesel cars.
At Nobuko Japan, we have helped Irish buyers import over 100 hybrids. This post explains the VRT saving, shows you real numbers, and proves why a Japanese hybrid is the smartest car you can buy in 2026.
Japan is a country full of hybrids. Toyota launched the first Prius there in 1997 and today, there are over 30% of Japanese cars that are hybrids.
Huge choice: Toyota Aqua, Prius, Voxy Hybrid, Alphard Hybrid, Honda Fit Hybrid, Nissan Note e-Power.
Low prices: Supply is high. Irish demand for these models is also high, but Irish supply is tiny.
Low mileage: Japanese hybrids average 5,000-7,000 miles per year. Irish used hybrids often have double that.
The result: You get a newer, lower-mileage hybrid for half the price of an Irish dealer car.
This is the key. Hybrid cars get a lower VRT rate than petrol or diesel.
VRT rates for hybrids in Ireland (based on COâ‚‚ emissions):
| COâ‚‚ Emissions (g/km) | VRT Rate (Petrol/Diesel) | VRT Rate (Hybrid Same COâ‚‚) | Your Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 g/km | 9% | 9% | €0 (same) |
| 100 g/km | 12% | 12% | €0 |
| 110 g/km | 13.5% | 13.5% | €0 |
| 120 g/km | 16% | 16% | €0 |
| 140 g/km | 20% | 20% | €0 |
Wait no difference? That is correct. The VRT rate is based purely on COâ‚‚ emissions. A petrol car with 100 g/km pays 12% and a hybrid with 100 g/km also pays 12%. There is no special hybrid discount.
So where is the saving?
The saving comes from lower COâ‚‚ emissions. Hybrids emit less COâ‚‚ than equivalent petrol cars. Lower COâ‚‚ = lower VRT rate.
| Car | Fuel | COâ‚‚ (g/km) | VRT Rate (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Voxy | Petrol | 165 | 28% |
| Toyota Voxy Hybrid | Hybrid | 110 | 13.5% |
Difference in VRT rate: 14.5% lower. On a €12,000 OMSP, that is €1,740 less VRT.
Plus: Hybrids use less fuel which saves you €500-€1,000 per year at the pump.
Nobuko Japan advice: Do not buy a Japanese petrol car when a hybrid exists. The VRT saving alone covers your shipping cost.
The process is the same as any Japanese import but hybrids have one extra advantage at NCTS.
Step 1: Choose your hybrid. Best sellers: Toyota Aqua (cheapest), Toyota Voxy Hybrid (family), Toyota Alphard Hybrid (luxury), Honda Fit Hybrid (city car).
Step 2: Bid at auction. You can even let us bid for you if you want. Auction prices in 2026: Toyota Aqua (2015) €2,500-€3,500. Voxy Hybrid (2015) €4,000-€6,000. Alphard Hybrid (2015) €7,000-€10,000.
Step 3: Ship to Dublin Port. RoRo shipping: €1,000-€1,500. 8-10 weeks total.
Step 4: Customs clearance. 0% duty for Japanese-built cars in 2026. 23% VAT on car + shipping.
Step 5: NCTS inspection and VRT payment are where hybrids shine. You present official Japanese COâ‚‚ emissions data. Revenue applies the lower rate.
Step 6: Registration, plates, motor tax. Drive away.
Total time: 8-14 weeks from auction to Irish road.
Let us compare two identical cars. 2017 Toyota Aqua with 50,000 km.
Dealer price: €12,500
VRT (already included in dealer price -but let us see)
Total cost: €12,500
| Cost Component | Amount (€) |
|---|---|
| Auction price (2017 Aqua) | €3,200 |
| Shipping (RoRo to Dublin) | €1,100 |
| Customs duty (0%) | €0 |
| VAT (23% of €4,300) | €989 |
| Customs agent + port fees | €250 |
| VRT (CO₂: 85 g/km - 9.75% of €8,000 OMSP) | €780 |
| Total landed and registered | €6,319 |
Your saving: €6,181 (nearly 50% less)
That is not a typo. You save over €6,000 by importing the exact same hybrid.
Nobuko Japan tip: The OMSP Revenue uses is lower for hybrids? Not necessarily but the lower COâ‚‚ rate still makes hybrids cheaper than petrol equivalents.
Real Example: How Expert Sourcing Saved an Irish Buyer Thousands on a Hybrid
Recently, an Irish customer based in Cork approached Nobuko Japan looking for a reliable hybrid family car within a reasonable budget. Initially, they had selected a 2016 Toyota Voxy Hybrid from an online listing that appeared clean in photos.
However, after reviewing the auction sheet, our team identified that the vehicle had a repair history marked with structural damage something not obvious in images alone.
The customer received the car in excellent condition at Dublin Port. At the NCTS centre, the low CO₂ figure meant VRT of just €780 (compared to over €2,000 for a petrol Voxy). Total landed cost: €7,200. An Irish dealer wanted €14,000 for a higher-mileage petrol Voxy.
The customer told us: "I almost bought the damaged car online. Nobuko Japan saved me from a nightmare. Plus, the hybrid saves me €80 per month on fuel. I will never buy petrol again."
This is the difference expert sourcing makes -avoiding hidden risks, finding the right hybrid, and ensuring long-term savings on both VRT and fuel.
| Model | Best For | COâ‚‚ (g/km) | VRT Rate | Auction Price (2015-2017) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Aqua | Budget city car | 85-95 | 9.75-11.25% | €2,500-€3,500 |
| Honda Fit Hybrid | Small family | 80-90 | 9-10.5% | €3,000-€4,500 |
| Toyota Voxy Hybrid | Family minivan | 110-120 | 13.5-16% | €4,000-€6,000 |
| Toyota Prius | Long-distance | 85-95 | 9.75-11.25% | €3,500-€5,000 |
| Nissan Note e-Power | City runabout | 85-95 | 9.75-11.25% | €2,800-€4,000 |
| Toyota Alphard Hybrid | Luxury people carrier | 130-140 | 17.5-20% | €7,000-€10,000 |
Nobuko Japan top pick: Toyota Aqua; cheap to buy and register. You get 60+ mpg which is perfect for Irish city driving.
Revenue needs proof of COâ‚‚ emissions to apply the correct VRT rate. For Japanese hybrids, you cannot use a European CoC.
Official emissions data from Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism
Letter from manufacturer (e.g., Toyota Ireland) confirming COâ‚‚ figures
Previous registration certificate (unlikely for fresh imports)
Nobuko Japan provides official Japanese emissions documentation with every hybrid we ship. You walk into the NCTS centre with proof. Revenue applies the low rate, no arguments and no flat charges.
Warning: Without CO₂ proof, Revenue applies a flat charge - usually based on a high estimate. For a hybrid, that could cost you €500-€1,000 extra. Do not skip the paperwork.
Same car, same year, just different fuel.
Car: 2017 Toyota Voxy
| Fuel | COâ‚‚ (g/km) | OMSP (Revenue estimate) | VRT Rate | Base VRT | NOx Levy | Total VRT |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | 165 | €11,000 | 28% | €3,080 | ~€500 (diesel only) | €3,080 |
| Hybrid | 110 | €11,000 | 13.5% | €1,485 | €0 (petrol hybrid) | €1,485 |
Hybrid saves: €1,595 on VRT alone.
Add fuel savings (€800/year) and lower motor tax. A hybrid pays for itself within 2-3 years.
Nobuko Japan tip: Revenue's OMSP is the same for petrol and hybrid versions of the same car. The rate is the only difference which is why hybrids win every time.
Importing a hybrid car from Japan to Ireland saves you money twice. First, on VRT-hybrids emit less COâ‚‚, so Revenue applies a lower rate (as low as 9% for efficient models like the Toyota Aqua). Second, on fuel - hybrids use 30-50% less petrol than non-hybrids.
The process is simple: choose a hybrid (Aqua, Voxy Hybrid, Alphard Hybrid), ship to Dublin (8-10 weeks, €1,000-€1,500), pay 0% duty, 23% VAT, and low VRT based on CO₂. Total savings over an Irish dealer car: €4,000-€6,000.
Nobuko Japan has helped over 100 Irish buyers import hybrids. We provide official COâ‚‚ emissions documents, verify battery health, and handle all customs paperwork.
